Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz, and is found in many locations worldwide, including Brazil and Uruguay. Varieties include Chevron Amethyst, which has banding of white quartz in, and Ametrine.

Amethyst first became known as a crystal to protect against drinking and addiction when the Greeks used it as a talisman against drunkenness. Their legend goes that the drunken God Dionysus set his tiger on the young Amethysta and then, realizing what he had done, turned her into a giant clear quartz crystal. His tears of remorse then stained the clear quartz purple, creating Amethyst. The Artists Stone, Composers Stone, Poets Stone, Painters Stone, and Inventors Stone. Known as the "All Healer"

Cacoxenite is very often confused with Goethite, especially as an inclusion within Amethyst. Many, of the specimens labeled as containing Cacoxenite golden strands are Goethite, especially those from Brazil but this is to be determined based on testing. It was first discovered in the Hrbek mines in Bohemia in 1825, in what is now the Czech Republic. Stone of Ascension.
