Amber is formed from the fossilized resin of pine trees millions of years ago. Some amber is dried with insects and other small creatures inside it, and such specimens are highly valuable. It is one of the most light weight gemstones. Most amber is a honey yellow-orange color and will glow under UV light. There is such a thing as blue amber found in the Dominican Republic. 
Amber has been prized by many civilizations, used as currency, and for medicine. It was so valuable in medieval times that unauthorized possession of amber was punishable by death. As a medicine, it was ground up an taken as an elixir. It is still used in Western and Chinese medicine today. Amber can also feel warm to the touch as it easily pulls in warmth from the body.
